HR+/HER2− breast cancer
- Breast cancer cells have receptors that can be activated by hormones such as estrogen and progesterone hormones or proteins such as the human epidermal growth factor
- Cancer growth is fueled by hormones or proteins
- Treatment is determined by receptor type and can include chemotherapy, hormone therapy, surgery, or radiation
- ~69% of all breast cancers are hormone receptor positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative
Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC)
- Triple negative breast cancer diagnosis occurs when cancer cells test negative for estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor receptor
- ~15% of all breast cancer is triple negative breast cancer
- TNBC is an aggressive form of breast cancer and disproportionately affects Black women

- Ricki is an award-winning seasoned marketing veteran that has transformed her strategic acumen into breast cancer advocacy. Ricki co-founded and serves as CEO of TOUCH, The Black Breast Cancer Alliance
- Ricki founded and serves as co-host for "The Doctor Is In," a weekly live web series on the BlackDoctor.org Facebook page, which reaches over 2 million viewers
- She writes regularly for the Black press including BlackDoctor.org, Black Health Matters, and The Cincinnati Herald
- Maimah is a TNBC Survivor. On February 2, 2006, at the age of 32, Maimah was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, with no family history of it
- Maimah founded Tigerlily Foundation in 2006, while undergoing chemotherapy. Its mission is to help young women with breast cancer as they face the disease and embark on the grueling path to recovery. Maimah grew Tigerlily Foundation from a concept to a national organization, with hundreds of volunteers nationwide, providing breast health, wellness, and transformational programs to young women across the country
- In 2010, Maimah published her memoir, Fearless: Awakening to My Life's Purpose Through Breast Cancer, which was a best-seller. In 2013, she founded Bliss Magazine, a quarterly publication that inspires others to live their soul purpose
- Shonta leads the development and execution of strategic initiatives to expand Patient Advocacy Foundation's approach to achieve health equity through community- and national-level partnership, engagement, and mobilization
- She brings to this role nearly 20 years of non-profit and public sector middle- and senior-level experience that spans public health, women's health, and behavioral health. She uses her voice to elevate the health and quality of life of people with cancer and other chronic diseases
- Shonta works with community stakeholders to reduce obstacles to optimal health for people living with disease in low-income neighborhoods. She co-chaired the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's Elevating Cancer Equity Working Group, formed to advance equity in oncology
- Hayley is a co-founder of the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation and has served on the Board of Trustees since its inception. The foundation was built on friendship. In 2005 Hayley and other young mothers, who had recently formed a playgroup for their young children, learned that their friend had triple-negative breast cancer
- The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 2006, with their friend named as the honorary founder. They provide funds and services for researchers and patients, including symposia, CME courses, research grants, webinars, and teleconferences on the latest treatments, and an online discussion forum for patients
- Hayley works to educate patients, HCPs, nurses, and the community about TNBC via online discussion forums and patient conferences. She works to meet the patients financial and social needs via a helpline with specially trained oncology social workers
- Dr Gary is a board-certified, fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist and Medical Director of the Grandview Health/Penn Cancer Network Cancer Program. She is an advocate and expert on health and healthcare disparities, she's passionate about developing integrative, holistic and innovate approaches to cancer treatment, prevention, and general wellness
- Dr Gary is the only African American female breast surgical oncologist in the state of Pennsylvania
- Nationally, she serves on the board of directors for the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Dr Gary was recognized as a Leading Physicians of the World and Top Breast Surgeon in Pennsylvania for 2017, 2018, and 2019, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the highest distinction awarded to surgeons in the nation
- Valerie was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer in early 2018. After finishing treatment, Valerie's sister urged her to attend an event she found online, the 2018 Living Beyond Breast Cancer Conference: Sharing Wisdom, Sharing Strength, which was supported by the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation
- Valerie was so inspired by the connections she made with other women at the conference and the stories they shared. Valerie got involved as a patient advocate and in 2019 received the Courage Award from the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation
- Valerie is a TNBC survivor and patient advocate that supports TOUCH and TNBC Foundation in their efforts to raise awareness around TNBC research efforts and resources for patients and their families
- Dr Kalu is a fellowship-trained Breast Surgical Oncologist and breast health specialist. She is dedicated to breast health education and breast cancer treatment in minority communities. Her interests are centered around breast cancer and healthcare disparities
- Her practice offers comprehensive breast care, including cancer and non-cancerous breast concerns, breast biopsies, consultations on abnormal mammograms, and all other breast health issues. She also specializes in gynecomastia (male breast tissue). Genetic testing and high-risk breast cancer screening are also offered
- Dr Davis is an Assistant Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, Department of Surgery, Scientific Director of the International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes, Weill Cornell Medical College, and co-author of more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles
- She is a classically trained molecular geneticist with expertise in genomics and systems biology. She uses this skillset to unravel the multifocal contributions to cancer risk, disparities in clinical oncology outcomes, and, link this information back to genetic ancestry, particularly Sub-Saharan West African Ancestry
- Her research interests are to identify biological mechanisms of racial disparities in cancer risk and clinical outcomes of cancer diagnoses
